Fountain House History
Fountain House has been in existence for more than seven decades. Six people worked together to start the organization. With an original group name of We Are Not Alone, the founders were all patients who stayed at Rockland State Hospital in New York. At that time, many people with mental illnesses were sent to hospitals. Those facilities were known for providing substandard care. People with mental illnesses often feel alone even when they are surrounded by friends or family members because the people around them do not experience the same feelings. The six founders wanted other victims to build strong bonds with one another and provide mutual emotional support, and they purchased a New York City building in 1948 to work toward that vision. Fountain House earned its name because there was a fountain in the property’s garden.

Why Fountain House Thrives

According to recent statistics, about 85 percent of people who have mental illnesses in the United States are unemployed. However, Fountain House has helped its members achieve an employment rate of more than 40 percent. When combined, the income of the organization’s members totals over $2 million annually. They work with more than 40 businesses throughout the New York City metro area. Fountain House places importance on medical care, education and housing in addition to mental health care.
According to statistics, the completion rate for school among people with mental illnesses is only about 30 percent. The members of Fountain House have a school completion rate that exceeds 75 percent. While the rate of re-hospitalization is about 50 percent among the general population, it is only 10 percent among the members of Fountain House. In New York City alone, there are more than 57,000 homeless people, and about 40 percent of those individuals have at least one type of mental illness. About 99 percent of Fountain House members have stable housing. The organization’s success depends on its unique model, which is the product of community involvement and strong support. The physical health and wellness program funds more than 40,000 meals for members every year. There are fitness classes and health groups that focus on wellness. Members learn how to maintain exercise routines and how to make healthy meals. The wellness program is supported by the YMCA and by several other organizations as well. When it comes to education, Fountain House boasts one of the country’s most comprehensive programs for people who have mental illnesses. Members have access to high school and college courses, and they receive support to help them succeed regardless of their limitations.
There is a special program for younger adults who are under the age of 30. It helps them face various challenges and navigate through the process of building a career. There are special programs for people who are Medicaid or Medicare members as well. Two acres of the High Point Farm in Montague are part of Fountain House, and some members help there with vegetable growing, orchard tending and alpaca care.
Fountain House Seeks A Brighter Future
Although the past and present have both been favorable for Fountain House, the directors want to expand the organization and reach more people in the future. The organization’s unique model has been so successful that it has been replicated by entities in 30 different countries. The model has helped more than 100,000 people receive holistic mental health care, and Fountain House has won several prestigious awards. One of its notable awards was the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, which it won in 2014. The directors feel that the organization’s biggest achievement is not its awards but its reputation for providing such powerful resources to thousands of people.
The wine dinner that was planned by Jeremy Goldstein and his colleagues was one of New York City’s hottest events for the month of May. Also, the article called it one of the biggest fundraisers of the year in the Big Apple. The event was held at the Nomad Hotel on the roof deck and began with a reception before the big dinner. Jeremy Goldstein Enjoys Helping Others
Jeremy Goldstein is often called one of the most passionate board members of Fountain House. He has been a member of the board since 2010. Jeremy is a respected attorney in New York City. He earned his law degree from New York University School of Law in 1999. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in art history from Cornell University, which he earned in 1995. Jeremy went on to the University of Chicago immediately after he graduated from Cornell and earned a master’s degree in art history. He operates his own boutique law firm now. Jeremy provides executive compensation guidance and corporate governance advice to management teams, CEOs, corporations and compensation committees.
Jeremy earned a name for himself in the city and across the country through his participation in some of the decade’s largest corporate transactions. One of those notable transactions was IBM’s acquisition of Truven Health Analytics. Jeremy Goldstein serves as a chair of the Mergers & Acquisitions Subcommittee, which is part of the American Bar Association’s Executive Compensation Committee. Additionally, he participates in speaking events about executive compensation and corporate governance. Jeremy has written about these topics and has been featured in several publications. He also earned the distinction of being on The Legal 500’s list of leading executive compensation attorneys.
