Mysteries Surrounding the Eyes

A complex system operates behind a person’s eyesight. Numerous parts combine to help a person see. A person’s eye measures approximately one inch in diameter and appears as a somewhat asymmetrical sphere. Visible parts of the eye include the following:

The iris renders an eye with poetical windows to the soul via a brown, blue, green or hazel hue.

The cornea is a dome that covers the iris.

The pupil is a round, black spot in the center of the iris. Light enters the eye via the pupil.

The sclera is the white part of the eye.

The conjunctive is composed of a fine tissue layer covering the front portion of the eye. However, the conjunctive does not cover the cornea.

  1. Lens, Light and Electrical Impulses

An eye’s lens is a transparent component resting in back of the iris and pupil. Light projects via the lens and pupil to the rear portion of the eye and is transformed into electrical impulses by the retina. Impulses travel to the brain via an optic nerve situated behind the eye. The retina also features a macula that enables a person to have central vision.

  1. Wear quality sunglasses that block 100 percent of ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

People who expose their eyes to ultraviolet rays for decades are more vulnerable to contracting cataracts or even macular degeneration. Eyes require protection on both sunny and cloudy days. Wide-brim hats also protect the eyes from harmful UV rays.

  1. Wear protective safety glasses when participating in activities that can harm the eyes.

Goggles protect the eyes from debris when using power tools. Protective glasses prevent chemicals from entering the eyes. Even a simple task such as mowing the lawn can cause twigs to damage the eyes unless the person wears safety glasses.

  1. Do not go to tanning salons.

Due to extremely high UV levels, sunlamps and tanning booths can permanently damage the eyesight. People who frequent tanning salons risk contracting cataracts or a type of eye cancer that attacks the uvea. Plus, exposing the body to sunlamps may cause skin cancer.

  1. According to Dr. David Samadi, the idea that reading in a badly lit room causes harm to the eyes is a myth.

However, reading in dim light can cause the eyes to feel tired. A person may also have dry eyes from reading near a lamp offering insufficient lighting. An older person may find that it is comfortable to read in brighter light. Install the right lighting fixture to alleviate temporary discomfort of the eyes.

  1. Dr. David Samadi advises teenagers and adults to avoid staring at mobile phone screens or computer screens for long hours without taking breaks.

Otherwise, people may experience unnecessary eyestrain, dry eyes and blurred vision. Protect the eyes by closing them for a few minutes or occasionally looking away from the screen.

  1. Do not get into the habit of smoking cigarettes and cigars.

Smoke can damage the eyesight leading to cataracts and optic nerve deterioration. People who already smoke need to find practical ways to stop smoking.

  1. Schedule an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist every year or, at the very least, every two years.

An eye doctor performs tests to ensure that the patient does not have glaucoma. It is easier to treat glaucoma in the beginning stage of the disease. An eye exam involves other tests in addition to testing the eyes for glaucoma, cataracts and vision problems. Visiting an eye doctor ensures that both eyes function as a unit and that the optic nerves are healthy. An eye doctor also examines the retina for any potential health issues or risks.

According to Dr. David Samadi, people should spend more time with their families. Playing sports, word games, praying together and going on family picnics can help conquer stress. Furthermore, Dr. Samadi advises people to embrace meaningful careers. Choosing a demanding job that does not resonate with a person’s inner self can cause unhappiness and bitter feelings. In addition to following a healthy, wholesome and happy routine, people should take care of their eyes. Good eyesight is important when a person gets older. Traveling, reading and dining at gourmet restaurants are more fulfilling activities when a person has good eyesight.

  2. The tip about the taking a break from looking at screens is so important in this day in age when it seems like we’re all constantly staring at a computer, tablet or phone for hours on end. What that will for our eye health long term, especially for young people, remains to be seen but I predict it’ll have an adverse effect on many people.

  4. Eye health is no joke! I’ve been struggling with dry eye for some time now. I’ve installed a nifty little app on my computer that reduces the blue light, and the strain on my eyes (f.lux) it’s helped quite a lot. I always did think that reading in dim light thing was a myth though!
