Christopher Burch: The Entrepreneur and Investor Shares His Gift Recommendations For Any Occasion

Christopher Burch is the founder and CEO of Burch Creative Capital, a New York-based private investment company. With a background of nearly 40 years as an investor and entrepreneur, he uses a set of creative skills in combination with sound financial practices to create, incubate, support, and scale disruptive brands and businesses. He has been involved in the rise of more than 50 companies, and his entrepreneurial values as well as his vision for novel market opportunities are what drive the company’s investment philosophy.

Always in the spirit of giving, Burch has shared his enthusiasm for year-round gift ideas that reflect his particular style and curious character. He writes that he enjoys an opportunity to gift new discoveries, some of which come from companies he has previously funded. With his gift choices, he likes to surprise his loved ones with items they would not usually spend money on for themselves. In his blog, he states that “Some of my gifting ideas are derived from the companies in which I invest, others I notice during my travels, and a few are quirky or unusual items that I’ve picked up for myself.” He has curated a list of six gifts, big and small, that he plans to give to his loved ones and for which he hopes will inspire his readers. These gifts include items such as a Barbour Gisburne jacket, a Snowe Home Candle Set, chocolate and candy from Fatty Sundays or Pretzables, a Trademark Cooper Cage Tote and a U.S. Jaclean Zero-Gravity Massage Chair. The list also includes a charitable donation in the name of the gift recipient.

Burch Creative Capital is a symbol for venture capital, which is based on Burch’s belief that creativity is pivotal in successful investing. The company is based on the desire to invest creativity, passion, and insights to create value. When asked about the idea behind the company, Burch describes it as his desire to use his knowledge and resources to help other entrepreneurs with great ideas. He adds, “That eventually led to my company today, Burch Creative Capital. We match ideas with funding to bring extraordinary possibilities to the world.” Currently it is supporting the growth of a wide range of lifestyle and consumer products, spanning from retail, apparel and home furnishings to the hospitality, organic foods, and technology industries. Burch himself has been involved in the rise of several brands, including Faena Hotel + Universe, Jawbone, Next Jump, Powermat, Tory Burch, Poppin, and Voss Water. The portfolio of Burch Creative Capital has recently expanded to include the introductions of ED by Ellen DeGeneres, Cocoon9, Nihi Sumba Island and TRADEMARK.

Acquired by Burch in 2012, Nihi Sumba Island is a top rated Indonesian luxury resort located a 50-minute flight from Bali. Faena Hotel + Universe marked the beginnings of Burch’s interest in hospitality. It was a joint collaboration between Burch, Philippe Stark, and Alan Faena in Argentina to redevelop an underutilized parcel of land.

The partnership with Ellen DeGeneres and the launch of the lifestyle brand ED by Ellen Degeneres was announced in July 2014. Cocoon9 was also launched later that year. Burch is currently supporting the development of other lifestyle and consumer products brands including BaubleBar, Blink Health, Brad’s Raw Foods, Chubbies, Little Duck Organics, and Soludos.

Burch was on the Rothman Institute Orthopedic Foundation board and a former president of The Pierre Hotel Co-op Board. He has helped fund research and philanthropic initiatives of Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, NYU Langone, The Sumba Foundation, The China Association of Social Work, The Child Welfare League of China, and The Henry Street Settlement.
