Avaaz means voice in several Asian and Middle Eastern languages, and giving a voice to the general public is exactly what this online community has set out to do. Although Avaaz has only been in existence for five years, it has quickly become one of the world’s largest and most influential global civic movement of our time. Avaaz has a simple and straightforward mission, namely to bridge the gap between the world we currently see around us and the one most people would like to see develop.
Avaaz Supports Empowerment
At the very core of its belief set and goals, Avaaz desires to empower individuals from all walks of life to stand up and fight against oppression of all types on a global scale. Some of the many issues that the group is targeting include, but are not limited to the following:
* Local and global issues both large and small
* Climate change
* Women’s rights
* Rights of minority groups
The bottom line is that this organization helps individuals to realize they are not powerless to effect change on both a local and national scale, and given the right support, major changes can be seen in our day.
The Victories of Avaaz
The organization has experienced a great deal of success over the last five years that they’ve been in existence. They have boasted some major changes in the scene of climate change, fossil fuels, keeping the internet free of corporate control, conserving ocean wildlife, fighting Monsanto, and bringing aid to victims of natural disasters. While this is not an all-encompassing list, it displays the wide variety of areas covered by the activist organization as well as the degree of success they have already experienced at bringing in massive waves of change over some key problems affecting millions today.
The Benefits of Technology
Previous civic organizations have experienced difficulty in reaching a large enough scale to affect real change in the world. This is a huge problem because even a group with the purest of motives cannot affect change without reaching a massive number of people.
Thanks to the growing use of the internet and advanced technology that didn’t exist in past generations, this is becoming less of a problem as seen with the success of groups such as Avaaz. Additionally, Avaaz is structured in a way that allows a single but globally active team to work together on any issue that the public is currently concerned with, allowing campaigns to be created with the flexibility and extreme focus that causes them to be even more successful.
The Leaders of Avaaz
Avaaz is led and operated primarily by two dedicated and deserving individuals. Emma Ruby-Sachs serves as the Deputy Director of the organization. She is a successful author, having written a novel as well as other works that have been published in a number of magazines and newspapers. Emma practiced constitutional law prior to becoming a part of Avaaz, where she worked on important issues surrounding wrongful arrest and conviction cases throughout Canada. She earned a degree from Wesleyan University and the University of Toronto.
Ricken Patel serves as the founder and CEO of Avaaz. Ricken has been widely acknowledged in the media as a game changer in the activist community and has also won several awards and distinguishments based on his contributions in this area. Having lived and worked under extreme conditions in Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, and other middle eastern areas, Ricken thoroughly understands the significance of conflict resolution for large organizations. Mr. Patel has a Masters Degree in Public Policy and graduated from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University.
Emma and Ricken continue to use their expertise and passion to bring light to important topics that affect millions of people around the globe and in doing so, they have grown their small activist organization into a large and successful group that has brought about some major changes on the world scene and from the looks of it, will continue to do so in the coming generations.
